A collection of masterpieces of chronograph wristwatch movements: the Valjoux 72

The Valjoux 72, the watch that changed the history of mechanical wristwatches

Among mechanical watches, the one that is most often compared to the Venus 178 is the Valjoux 72.

These are the two movements that are said to be distinctive, and today I will focus on the Valjoux 72.

The most representative movement equipped with the Valjoux 72 is

・Rolex Paul Newman・Rolex Daytona・Breitling Navitimer, etc.

The most distinctive feature of the Valjoux 72 is the 12-hour counter at the 6 o'clock position.

Until then, mechanical chronographs only had two subdials.

One is a 30-minute counter, the other is a 45-minute counter.

is.

It was the Valjoux 72 that made it possible to equip this watch with a 12-hour counter.

However, even though it was said that this 12-hour counter would be installed, the reason that it had not been installed until then was not simply because it was not chosen, but because there was no space to accommodate it.

Designers find space where there isn't any, since it's impossible to find a lot of space due to the barrel and attachments.

That's why I thought it would be best to place it on the side of the dial where there is more space.
There is also a derivative model, the Valjoux 72C, which is a Valjoux 72 equipped with a calendar function.

There are other prototypes of the Valjoux 72.

There is a movement called Valjoux 72 VZH.
This is a prototype movement for the Valjoux 72.

Similarly, there is the Valjoux VZ, which is also a prototype version of the Valjoux 23.
In other words, the h in vzh stands for hour.

To add some confusion, there is also a move called the Valjoux ght.

It is said that this was manufactured to a different design than the Valjoux 22, but the two share the same baseplate and other parts and have many similarities.

The big difference is the number of teeth on the column wheel.

The Valjoux 22 has 8 strokes compared to the ght's 6.
However, whether it is the Valjoux VZ, VZH series, or the GHT, they are all rare movements, which is why the Valjoux 72 is considered a masterpiece.

As such, there is currently a global demand for the Valjoux 72 movement, and even in Japan there are very few of them, making them very difficult to find.
