Let's take a look at what kind of watch the SINN EZM1 series is!

In today's article, we will be explaining the SINN EZM1 series of watches.

It is the EZM1 series, but there are now many different models available, including reproduction models, so it can be difficult to distinguish the subtle differences.

Here, we will explain the history and appeal of the EZM1 series, as well as the features of each model, so please stay with us until the end.

So let's get started right away.

What is the EZM1 series?

Helmut Sinn, founder of SINN

The company is called SINN, but compared to more famous Swiss brands it has a shorter history, having been founded in 1961 by pilot and flight instructor Helmut Sinn.

As a former pilot himself, he understands the standards required for a watch, and SINN watches are characterized by their simple, sturdy and rugged construction.

The SINN EZM series was developed in 1997 by the German Customs Criminal Service's special forces, the ZUZ Central Works Group Zoll/ It all started with the EZM1, which was developed at the request of the Zentral Unterstutzungsgruppe Zoll (Central Support Group for the Customs Administration).

As EU integration progressed, border checkpoints were removed and people from different countries could travel between the EU as if it were one country, so ZUZ needed a watch with more advanced functions.

At that time, ZUZ requested SINN to come up with the idea for the defense of German customs, and SINN came up with the '503 EZM1'.

However, what most people here, both those who know about EZM and those who don't, are wondering is, "I can understand the meaning if it was on a battlefield, but why customs?"

I think that's what it means.

When I first became interested in EZM, I thought it was really cool, but to be honest I had no idea what was so harsh about the customs, and I felt that it was a bit weak in terms of history.

However, that's because only Japanese customs can see it.

Gunfights are unlikely to occur at Japanese customs, but at European customs, many different people pass through and this can also be the case for dangerous groups such as drug cartels.

The role of the ZUZ unit is to support Customs officers in protecting them from dangerous situations when they carry out arrests and detections.

Because accurate timekeeping is essential when carrying out extremely complex and sophisticated operations, the ZUZ unit turned to SINN for a chronograph that was as durable as a precision instrument.

It was essential that the time be instantly visible not only in situations where speed was required, but also in the most adverse conditions.

Members of GSG9

Incidentally, ZUZ (Zett Wu Zett) is made up of 20 members selected from GSG9 (German Federal Police's special anti-terrorism unit ).

While ZUZ is also used by drug cartels, it seems to have a stronger role as a deterrent against terrorism.

As such, since this watch did not have a military origin from war, but was provided to troops fighting against modern ``terrorist organizations,'' it is likely that the way this model looks has changed significantly.

Now let's take a look at the EZM initials and the actual watch.

Features of the 503 EZM1

What is EZM? The German phrase "Einsatz Zeit Messer" means "departure, time, and measuring equipment." In other words, it is a "deployment measuring device."

The watch's features include a titanium case and bracelet to reduce weight, to avoid putting pressure on the back of the hand, and to avoid interfering with the mission. The crown and chronograph pushers are located on the left side.

Let's take a look at the dial.

Features of the SINN EZM1 Dial

The dial is It is a dark grey matte finish, with white indexes and hands for timekeeping.

By the way, the reason why the text such as the logo and date, other than the indexes and hands, is red, is so that they blend in even in the dark and are as inconspicuous as possible.

The movement is the Lemania Cal. 5100 . The small seconds, 12-hour counter, and 24-hour counter, which are normally displayed in small windows, have been removed.

I will explain why we have removed this built-in functionality in this way.

ZUZ operations usually last no longer than 15 minutes, so a seconds and minute counter are all that is needed.

By leaving only the essential functions and focusing on visibility, we have created a minimalist display with no unnecessary features.

There are two hands on the same axis, one is a normal chronograph hand and the other is a minute counter.

For more information on the Lemania Cal. 5100, please see this video:

Now let's take a look at the specs.

Water resistant to 300m

Even a small amount of moisture that gets into the glass during manufacturing can affect visibility. The inside is filled with argon gas and is equipped with a dry capsule to remove internal moisture.

The oil used in the movement is a special original SINN oil that is guaranteed to operate within a temperature range of -45 °C to +80 °C.

Now let's take a look at each model of EZM1.

SINN Chronograph EZM1 Series

There are three watches lined up, the one on the far left and in the middle are the first generation, which were released in 1997.

The one on the left is a civilian model that was produced until 2005, and its distinctive feature is that it has 3H at the 6 o'clock position, which stands for tritium.

The model in the middle was produced only in 1997 and was actually distributed to ZUZ.

The mark at the 6 o'clock position is the ZUZ mark.

The model on the far right is a limited edition of 250 pieces produced in 2008, and the notation at 6 o'clock reads "Ar," which stands for Super-LumiNova, which was the most advanced luminous material at the time.

Now let's take a look at the next-generation model.

EZM1.1

The next model, the EZM1, was released in 2017 and was limited to 500 units.

This model was made to mark the 20th anniversary of the birth of the EZM1, and at first glance it looks almost identical to the 2008 model, but unlike the previous three models, this model's size has been increased from 40mm to 43mm.

The material has also changed from titanium to stainless steel, which has been treated with TEGIMENT processing.

Simply put, TEGIMENT processing is a black coating similar to PVD.

The movement used in this watch has also been changed from the Lemania Cal. 5100 to the in-house Cal. SZ01.

This SZ01 movement is also designed and manufactured based on the Lemania Cal. 5100.

summary

This time I have focused on the EZM1 series, EZM2 for naval forces, The EZM3 diver's watch was developed for the German police special forces. The EZM4 was developed for fire and rescue teams. There are many different types of professional watches.

As the president was originally a pilot, his philosophy of retaining only the necessary functions in pursuit of visibility makes this a modern military watch.

I think that in the future, this watch could take on the role of IWC's Mark 11.
