Military Watch Breitling DND Monopusher Chronograph

Vintage Military Watches

Breitling

Vintage military watches are one of the most fascinating genres in watch collecting.

These rugged, no-frills, practical and sturdy vintage military watches have been used in harsh environments, unlike those used by today's "desk divers" (watches meant as decoration).

Military issued watches come in a variety of genres, including field watches and chronographs for divers and aviators.

Here we will introduce one attractive watch from among them.

Canadian Military Breitling

Breitling front

This is a Breitling watch issued to military personnel in the late 1960s.

The "DND" engraved on the back of the watch stands for "The Department of National Defense."

The immediately noticeable feature is the lack of any logo (branding) on the dial.

Not only is there no branding, there is nothing printed on it at all.

Unlike many other countries' militaries, the Defense General has opted for a blank dial.

Breitling was, of course, a famous luxury watch manufacturer at the time.

However, the Canadian Ministry of National Defense instructed that the manufacturer's name on the inner case back be removed and all brand names be removed.

The same support was given to supply contractors Lemania and Omega.

It seems likely that visibility was the first priority.

Aside from its use of a blank dial, this watch is an interesting example of a monopusher chronograph.

It is equipped with the Valjoux 236, an improved version of the Valjoux 23, with a seconds hand at the 9 o'clock position and a 30-minute counter.

This is a movement based on the 23, but with a higher vibration rate of 6 vibrations (21,600 vibrations per hour), making it possible to produce greater precision and power.

The chronograph can be started, stopped and reset using a single pusher at the 2:00 mark.

With its white dial, red chronograph second hand, black outer track and Arabic numerals, this DNDF issued chronograph has a look unlike any other military watch and is beloved by collectors around the world.

This type of aircraft with the DND stamp on it is extremely rare, and the only one commonly seen on the market is the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force), but this is the first generation and is stamped with DND.
