WW2 Timor Dirty Dozen Military Wristwatch circa 1945
WWW is called a waterproof watch.
During World War II, with pressure mounting from the German military, the Department of Defense needed to issue troops with watches that could withstand the harsh realities of war.
The Ministry of Defense provided specifications for the watch, and a number of Swiss companies responded: the watch had to be accurate, reliable and durable - in watchmaking terms, it had to meet chronometer standards, be waterproof and shock-resistant.
It also had to have a black dial, Arabic numerals, luminous hour and minute hands, luminous indexes, a railroad track minute hand, a shatterproof crystal and a stainless steel case. It was fitted with a 15-jewel, 11.75-13 ligne movement.
The twelve companies selected are: Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor and Vertex.
