WW2 Jaeger-LeCoultre Dirty Dozen circa 1945😊

WWW is called a waterproof watch.

During World War II, with pressure mounting from the German military, the Department of Defense needed to issue troops with watches that could withstand the harsh realities of war.

So the Defense Department put forward the specifications for the watch, and although many Swiss companies responded, the Defense Department narrowed it down to 12 companies, hence the nickname "Dirty Dozen." The watch had to be accurate, reliable and durable - in watchmaking terms, it had to meet chronometer standards, be waterproof and shock-resistant.

It also had to have a black dial, Arabic numerals, luminous hour and minute hands, luminous indexes, a railroad track minute hand, a shatterproof crystal, a stainless steel case, and a 15-jewel, 11.75-13-lime movement.

The twelve companies selected are: Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor and Vertex.

Only 6,000 JLC watches were issued to troops during World War II, and it is unknown how many remain.
