Vintage 1953 Rolex "Everest Explorer" Oyster Perpetual Shock Resistance REF. 6298

Description of item

A stunning, pristine Rolex Everest Explorer watch from 1953.

The Rolex Explorer was introduced in 1953.

We started with a prototype specialized for commercial use.

The Rolex Explorer has always been associated with the rigors of international adventure and exploration.

It was famously tested during the 1953 Himalayan expedition by Sir Edmund Hillary and his successor Tenzing Norgay to the summit of Mount Everest.

This highly collectible model, ref. 6298, is extremely attractive and stylish.

The steel 36mm case is in untouched/unpolished condition.

The original (unrestored) dial is in good condition with a very light and even patina.

This is a completely original watch made in 1953.

It also has the original Rolex Swiss made crown.

Fitted with a new high quality Hirsch belt and buckle.

A similar model was issued specially to the 1953 British Everest Expedition, as pictured below.

Although it is in English, I will post a reference site.

Case

The stainless steel case has normal wear from aging but is in good unpolished condition.

Case diameter is 36mm without the crown and 44mm in length including the lugs.

All markings are engraved on the inside of the case back.

'Montres Rolex S.A', 'Geneva Swiss', 6298, III.54 (produced in the 3rd quarter of 1953), it also has many service markings from over the years. The middle of the case has the model number 6298 and 'Brevet +', and serial number 928967.

The glass is original and has many scratches as can be seen in the pictures.

Dial

Typically watches of this model have had their dials restored, but this dial is completely original (unrestored) and has a very light and even patina.

The dial features a steel arrowhead baton and dagger hand.

The dial is signed.

'Rolex Oyster Perpetual', 'Shock-Resisting', 'Swiss'.

Movement

The movement is in very good condition and has been fully serviced.

The movement is signed.

'Rolex Perpetual', 'Swiss Made', 'Patented', and numbered 07108.

belt

To complete this fine watch, it is fitted with a new high quality Hirsch strap and buckle.

Box and documents

As with many vintage watches that are over 70 years old, the original certificates and boxes have been lost or discarded over the years.

However, even though this watch does not have the original box or certificate, the reference numbers, markings, signatures and hallmarks are all correct, indicating that this watch was made circa 1953.
